Examination

GUILD Examinations provide an excellent goal for students in their music&speech studies. They give a sense of purpose and direction and can be undertaken in addition to other activities. They are not meant to be the only event in a student's musical year. The report provides a reliable assessment of a candidate's progress and contributes to the student's overall musical development.

GUILD offers a systematic teaching system, which is used as a guide in classroom teaching. Whether your students prefer Classical, Contemporary, Jazz, Modern Music or Speech&Drama, Public Speaking, Oral Communication, the GUILD syllabus always has something to offer them.

When preparing students for GUILD examination, one does not need to purchase additional examination books, because GUILD selected examination pieces are taken from books used in the classroom such as Alfred, Czerny, Christopher Norton, Puffin, Oxford, etc.

In addition, GUILD is the first examining body to offer candidates and teachers the concept of 'Own Choice' in any list and in any practical subject area. This was introduced on the basis that no one person is the same as another. Many different physical, mental and emotional factors sometimes causes the withdrawal of a candidate's musical interest when confronted with an uncompromising selection of works, as so often happens in many syllabuses. GUILD syllabuses have been innovatively enhanced to allow candidates and teachers full access to a large selection of works in order to progress to their full potential.

The GUILD conducts many thousands of practical and theory examinations every year. Since 1982, when the GUILD was thoroughly overhauled and given a new direction, examination standards have been stabilised so that Examiner Variation does not exceed 3% in the marking between different examiners. The GUILD Examiner training scheme ensures this stability and allows three different levels of examiner accreditation. No person is appointed as a GUILD examiner until one of these courses (minimum 12 months) has been successfully concluded.

The GUILD Grading System :-
100 ~ 96 = High Distinction
95 ~ 90 = Distinction
89 ~ 85 = Honours
84 ~ 80 = B+ Credit
79 ~ 75 = B Credit
74 ~ 70 = C+ Pass
69 ~ 65 = C Pass
64 ~ 0 = Not Grade Standard {NGS} (No certificate issued)

Please refer to the syllabus for the minimum pass mark as it varies with each subject. Students who achieved below passing mark will be marked as "NGS for Grade/Level Exams and NDS for Diploma Exams" which means the student has not reached the required standard for the particular grade or level. The word "FAIL or Below Pass" is not used to keep the students morally elated and motivated to try again or move on to the next grade or level.

Examiners sometimes may use "NGS" when marking a particular section in an examination. This is always an indication that much more work remains to be accomplished in that section.

Examination entry is open to all irrespective of age and any instrument offered by the GUILD. Examinations are held twice yearly - May/June and November/December

Music

The GUILD Music Practical Examinations Syllabus is unique in itself as students and teachers are given a flexible system to work with. They can choose to in both play Classical or Contemporary music and a wide repertoire of works are selected to give students a sound foundation in musicianship. It is purposely designed to meet the needs of Teachers, Professional Musicians and Educational Institutions.

Examiners will carefully consider poise, musical control & co-ordination, style, tone quality and interpretation of the piece. The ability of the student to use technical control of fingers, hands, wrists, arms and employ the concept of economy of movement will be a strong deciding factor in the students’ assessment.

Music Theory examinations cover both classical and modern aspects of music. Students learn the formation of modern chords and it gives them more avenue for composition as they have to write melodies from a given phrase, for given words and from chords.

PRACTICAL GRADED EXAMINATIONS

This exam has been specially designed with well balanced attributes. It covers all aspects in the enhancement of the musical skills of students whose aim is to be music educators.

Students, who choose to take Practical Graded Examinations, are required to prepare all technical studies such as scales, sight reading, ear tests and the pieces required for the particular grade. They can still choose to play either classical or contemporary pieces or a combination of both. The pieces chosen must be of contrasting styles i.e. two pieces cannot be of the same style.

No grade lower than the Proficiency Certificate requires a pre-requisite in theory.

The Proficiency Certificate (better known as Grade 8) is a prerequisite for entry into the Associate Diploma. This Diploma consists of two parts: - Part One: Theory Grade 6&Part Two: Practical. Students are allowed to take each part in a separate exam but it must be completed within a span of three years.

The Associate Diploma is a prerequisite examination for entry into the Licentiate Diplomas which consist of two parts :- Part One: Theory Grade 7 & Part Two: Practical). Students are allowed to take each part in a separate exam but it must be completed within a span of three years.

Similarly for Licentiate Diploma which consists of two parts: - Part One: Theory Grade 8 & Part Two : Practical). There is an additional Part Three: Principles of Teaching Theory is a requirement for students taking the Licentiate Teacher Diploma. Students are allowed to take each part in a separate exam but it must be completed within a span of three years.

PRACTICAL LEVEL EXAMINATIONS

This exam is designed for musicians whose desire is to perform. Theory and other technical skills are kept to a minimum. Students who choose the Practical Level Examinations need only to play the number of pieces required for the Level. No technical studies such as scales, sight reading and aural test are required. They would also need to prepare a short information segment in a small folio on the pieces played. The pieces chosen could be classical or contemporary or a combination of both. However they would need to be of different styles and no two pieces should be of the same style e.g. two waltzes.

Students taking the Level 8, Professional Performance Diploma and Diploma in Public Performance are not required to obtain a pass in any level of the Theory of Music Examination. However, those taking the Professional Performance Diploma and Diploma in Public Performance should have passed a Level 8 and Professional Performance Diploma respectively.

MUSIC THEORY EXAMINATIONS

Music Theory under the GUILD gives students knowledge of both classical and contemporary theory. Not only do they learn about classical chords, its formation and progression they are also taught the formation of modern chords giving them a wider concept of music.

Composition plays an important role in music education. Students are taught composition when they have to complete an eight bar phrase and adding a melody to a given set of words. The GUILD gives students another method of composition when they have to write a melody to given chords.

English Communication

The GUILD has specially designed a comprehensive approach to assess students' skill in English Communication for young students from kindergarten (age 4) to secondary-level (age 18). It serves as an assessment of the students' skills and confidence at a very early stage of development in English Communication.

The main objective of this examination is to benchmark a students' communicative English. By fulfilling the examination requirements students will enjoy learning English in a fun and interactive way which will plant seeds of desire in them to master the language. The examination also determines the ability of an individual to use and understand the International Standard English.

Students whose English is a second language will find these examinations very beneficial for them. Starting at an early age they will be given the opportunity to learn English in a proper manner. This will in turn boost their confidence to speak in public effectively and accurately. In today's global pressures, students who are proficient in the English Language will find they have an advantage over those who cannot speak the language fluently.

Students are required to recite poems from memory, mime, some drama, and to hold discussions with the examiner on their poem, prose or class project. By doing this they will enhance their communicative English and be able to hold simple presentations.

Kindergartens, Primary and Secondary Schools that include these examinations into their curriculum will give leverage to their education establishment as they will be training and encouraging their students to speak and learn English in a more fun and interactive way. Children, possessing more confidence will learn faster and smarter

The English Communication examinations are divided into 3 categories:-

1) Kintergarden

  • K1 (age 4)
  • K1 (age 5)
  • K1 (age 6)
2) Primary School
  • Level 1 (Primary 1)
  • Level 2 (Primary 2)
  • Level 3 (Primary 3 & 4)
  • Level 4 (Primary 5 & 6)
3) Secondary School
  • Level 5 (Secondary 1 & 2)
  • Level 6 (Secondary 3 & 4)
  • Level 7 (Secondary 5 & 6)

Speech & Drama And Oral Communication

In Speech and Drama syllabus, students are required to work with drama, mimes, speech and acting. The students will enjoy extending their creativity and imagination, having fun pretending to be someone or something different according to the story. It is always full of fun and students learn action songs and other activities so much so they want to do more!

Speech and Drama builds a students confidence and self-esteem. While enjoying speaking the language accurately with articulation and expression they also learn to work with other children in the class as a team.

Children are also taught to communicate with sensitivity adding colour, clarity and tone to their speech. In this way they are also come to understand that communication is two ways and one has to listen as well as speak. Contribution in a conversation is essential. This is one way to also inculcate in students a desire to read.

Speaking in public has always instilled a certain amount of fear in both adults and children. Teaching children at an earlier age the art of speaking with poise, skill, enthusiasm and confidence will give them a good foundation in public speaking. This foundation will assist them later in life to handle effectively oral and physical communication with self-assurance.

This syllabus helps students to reduce communication apprehension through recitation of prose or poems, book review discussions, story telling, prepared speeches and conversations.

In addition, it encourages critical thinking in students, aids them in articulating their ideas and presenting them with clarity. Some of the works require students to prepare in advance and in doing so increases their reading time. Organising material in order to communicate orally is an effective way for a student to identify and clarify their thought patterns. When they have a clearer mind they will possess the capability to understand and express complex ideas orally.

The School Leavers Certificate prepares students in telephone techniques, how to carry out research, and develop the art of impromptu, social and public speaking. This will give students additional knowledge when looking for a job.

The Proficiency Certificate (Public Speaking) and the Associate Performer Diploma(Public Speaking) consists of two parts- Theory and Practical. The Theory section is compulsory and students have to obtain at least a minimum pass of C+ 70 marks to qualify for the certificate.
